Presenting the Ascend AI Workstation, Fractal North XL Edition
This build began with a detailed technical discussion with the customer, not a quick parts list. The brief was focused: a dedicated LLM training system capable of handling sustained compute workloads without instability over time.

The goal wasn’t headline specs. It was consistency, a machine that could train models for long sessions, manage large datasets, and perform predictably day after day.

One requirement shaped the platform early: native Thunderbolt support to reliably drive an LG UltraFine 5K display at full resolution. That narrowed the options immediately. Instead of relying on adapters or add-in cards, we chose a platform that supported it properly at a hardware level.

From there, every decision followed the same logic. PCIe bandwidth suited to GPU workloads. Memory capacity aligned with model training demands. Storage fast enough to keep datasets moving. Cooling configured for sustained thermal control, not short bursts.

Purpose-Built AI Platform
At the core of this system is the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X processor, paired with the ASUS ProArt X870E-Creator WiFi motherboard. This workstation-class platform was selected for its stability, strong power delivery, and native Thunderbolt support, making it well suited to sustained AI workloads and professional display requirements without adapters or compromises.

High-End Compute Performance
Driving accelerated workloads is the ASUS GeForce RTX 5090 ROG Astral 32GB graphics card. With substantial VRAM capacity and next-generation compute performance, it provides the headroom required for large models, complex datasets, and memory-intensive AI tasks. This configuration allows the system to scale with workload demands rather than hitting early limitations.

Thermal Control and Reliability
Cooling the Ryzen 9 9950X is the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III PRO 360 AIO, chosen for its strong thermal performance and consistency under sustained load. This ensures stable boost behaviour during long training runs while keeping noise levels controlled. The Fractal Design North XL case supports this with a clean internal layout and efficient airflow, well suited to professional environments.

Memory, Storage, and Power Delivery
The system is equipped with 96GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 memory in a 2x48GB configuration, providing ample capacity for modern AI workloads while maintaining efficient memory performance. Storage is handled by four Samsung 990 PRO Gen4 NVMe SSDs, split across two 2TB and two 4TB drives, offering fast dataset access, scratch space, and long-term capacity. Power is supplied by the In Win P105II 1050W 80 Plus Platinum ATX 3.1 power supply, delivering stable, efficient power for high-end components.
