The next generation of graphics cards from Nvidia are pulling more power from your power supply than ever before, and as such the new RTX 40-Series graphics cards now come with a new type of power connector to supply all that juice to your new graphics card! These new power connectors and cables deliver the power needed to unlock the maximum performance of these graphics cards, but there are some precautionary measures that users should be aware of when installing one of these new connectors on their graphics card. The new connector is the 12VHPWR cable, which is replacing the traditional 6-pin and 8-pin PCIe cables that have been used up until now. It is smaller than these older style cables, and it is possible to damage the cable when bending it for cable management purposes. Through manufacturer and 3rd party testing, it has been found that bending the wires too close to the connector can sometimes cause issues within the connector and increase the risk of overheating through uneven distribution of load across the individual wires. CableMod's testing revealed that this risk is substantially higher when bending the cable horizontally relative to the connector orientation (left to right)
As such, CableMod recommends to be extremely careful when installing this cable, and make sure to not bend the cable too close to the connector. A suggested recommendation is to have at least a 35mm distance from the connector before bending the cable if possible.
A few other things to pay attention to when installing and handling the cable:
- Please make sure that the cable is FULLY PLUGGED IN to your GPU. A loose connection could lead to reduced contact between the terminals and the socket pins.
- Please slide the cable combs slowly when adjusting their position. Using too much force to slide the combs could damage the sense wires.
