How to Choose the Workstation Specs

  • Processor

    Modelling and animation within Maya is largely single-threaded, so clock speed wins over overall core-count, making Intel’s Core i7 and i9 processors, as well as AMD’s Ryzen 7 and 9 processors ideal for this application. If cutting down render times is your primary goal, you can’t look past AMD’s Threadripper processors, as their high core counts make quick work of render tasks.

  • Graphics Card

    The performance of the graphics card installed in a Maya workstation dictates the framerate that the viewport is able to run at. Autodesk recommends users steer towards Nvidia’s professional-grade RTX A-series graphics cards, though in our testing Nvidia’s GeForce cards can offer a more cost-effective way of achieving the desired performance.

  • Memory

    The complexity of your projects will dictate amount of RAM required, however as a general rule-of-thumb, we recommend a minimum of 16GB high-speed DDR5 RAM for most users, with 32GB recommended for larger projects. In general Maya doesn’t require much RAM for modelling and animation, though for rendering larger projects, 64GB+ may be needed.
