Large language models almost exclusively rely on the graphics card’s processing power, so your processor selection is determined more by what other applications you intend to run on your AI workstation, as well as consideration of the number of PCIe lanes being provided by the processor. When running multiple GPUs, it is important to ensure that there are enough PCIe lanes to prevent PCIe bifurcation, which reduces bandwidth to the cards.

The amount of RAM you need for an AI workstation depends on several factors, including the specific AI workloads you plan to run, the size of the datasets, the complexity of the models, and the number of concurrent tasks being executed by the workstation, however, as a general rule-of-thumb, we recommend a minimum of 64GB of RAM for most users, 128GB of RAM for users with 3+ graphics cards, and 256GB or users with 4+ graphics cards.
